CIURI CIURI

CIURI is the Sicilian word for flower and is normally used as a term of endearment. In this song it is being used with sarcasm and the man is saying that he is taking all the love that he was given and giving it back to her. There are many verses to the song and endless variations. In some the unhappy lover castigates not only his former sweetheart but all women as well. 

TARANTELLA SICILIANA

This song is without lyrics and it rapresents a typical "Tarantella siciliana". It is used an instrument called "scacciapensieri"

LA LUNA AMMENZU U MARI

This is one of the most popular Sicilian songs and is replete with double entendre. It is most effectively sung by two voices, those of the mother and the daughter. The daughter sings to her mother that there is a moon over the water or sea and so she wants to marry (the age of arranged marriages) and the mother asks her who she should give her and the daughter tells her to decide. As it's usually sung, it goes on verse after verse with the mother considering the barber, the butcher, the baker, the mason, the pastry cook, etc. Each verse ends with a reference to an item associated with each artisan and how it will be applied to the daughter.

QUANTO E' LARIA LA ME ZITA

It is a traditional Sicilian song talking about a very ugly woman, analysing all her physical difects. But in the end she has a lot of money and this covers all her difects

NICUZZA

NICUZZA is a romantic folksong the singer dedicates to her little (NICA in sicilian) girlfriend.

VITTI NA CROZZA

VITTI NA CROZZA is an old folksong about someone who sees a skull sitting atop a corner cabinet and asks it what it is doing there. The skull replies that it had the misfortune of not having heard bells ringing at its death and so it's consigned to this unhappy state

U SCICCAREDDU

U SCICCAREDDU is a very popular folksong with lyrics about a donkey (in Sicilian "u sciccareddu")

ABBALLATI

ABBALLATI is an old folksong, it is very fast and involves people to dance (''abballatti'' mean ''Let's dance'').

ALAMIA E SPERANDEO - LA PARTITA & LA SCAMPAGNATA

Giovanni Alamia and Gaetano Sperandeo were two actors/singers quite famous in the area of Palermo. Their songs were quite famous in the '90s, they were changing the worlds of famous italian songs which became sicilian songs with funny lyrics. Here there are two of the most famous ones.

Here we will show you the famous song for the world cup 90 (la partita) and "la scampagnata". Lyrics are in Sicilian though, so hard to understand for foreigners

MARINAREDDU

MARINAREDDU is famous in the area of Siracusa, by the ''CANTERINI DI ORTIGIA''. It is an happy song of a fisherman who's thinking of the girl that he loves and glories in the freedom he enjoys while at sea.
